I know this is supposed to be an all-photography site, but I have to say something about the most amazing show I've ever been to... Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts, put on by the American Folk Art Museum.
651 quilts are on display in the wide open space of the Armory on Park Avenue. Swirling 'rooms' of quilts were placed in the space and you could see layers and layers of red and white quilts everywhere. I wanted to cry it was so beautiful, but instead I took pictures. The circle of chairs represents the women who gathered to quilt and create such beauty.
Joanna S. Rose accumulated quilts over the years. Didn't know how many she had. Her husband asked her what she wanted to do for her 80th birthday. She said "something I've not seen before and something that would be a gift for New York City". Seeing all these quilts at the same moment would be the ideal gift. She is gifting some of the collection to the Fold Art Museum. Her family made a donation so that the admission would be free for the six days of the exhibition. What a gift to NYC!!! The New York Times did a very good write-up on the show.
The show is supposed to travel... hope it comes to all of you so you have the chance to share in this amazing experience.
P.S. Minutes after returning home from the show my Mom called. "You have to go see this red and white quilt show at the Armory"... uncanny... does she (and my Dad who reads the Times in Moneta, VA) know me or what?
